Borrowing a title from our Sunday Parkways friends, the Slow Streets Superheroes are key to the upkeep of Greenways installations. Superheroes will regularly visit and report on the status of barricades and signs. When issues are found and reported, the Greenways Response Team will deploy and resolve the problem. The goal is to provide a near-immediate deployment of the response team to fix any issues with Greenways installations.

Responsibilities

• Perform one or more checks per week on Greenways installations.
• Identify needed repairs, missing infrastructure, or adjustments to the installations.
• Report all issues to the Greenways Response Hotline for immediate resolution.
• Be a cheerful ambassador of the Slow Streets | Safe Streets and Greenways programs to the public, especially to people in cars and critics you may meet.
• Build relationships with local neighbors and other Greenways volunteers that give them confidence in our response and care.
• Provide patient and understanding service to people in cars who “do not appear” to be using the Neighborhood Greenways for local access only. We are not enforcing local access in any way.

Skills and Qualifications

• Supporter of the Slow Streets | Safe Streets initiative and the goals of the Neighborhood Greenways program.
• Have pride in serving Portland and our neighbors in a professional and friendly manner.
• Be self-motivating, dependable and consistent when volunteering.
• Have the presence to follow clear instructions, but problem solve to achieve best results.
• Have the ability to communicate assertively, positively, and empathetically with confused or upset people. 
• Live in or near one of the Greenways Response zones.
• Own a cell phone with a data plan, functioning camera, and capable of sending and receiving texts.
• Wear work appropriate clothing, including closed toed shoes.

We invite those who live near Greenways barricade locations to “adopt the installation.” This is an informal, non-binding support of a site. The request is for neighbors of installations to make daily checks and agree to report issues to the Greenways Response Team. Additionally, if interested, there are opportunities to lead projects that decorate and activate your neighborhood Greenways.

If you are interested in adopting a Greenways installation, please register to volunteer. There is a question that asks which location you would like to support.

Help PBOT spread the message across the city to promote slow streets and safe streets in our neighborhoods.  The Greenways Volunteer program has signed up to help deliver nearly 1,500 yard signs to our neighbors.  We're looking for volunteers in each Greenways Zone who agree to store and deliver signs when requested.

Responsibilities

• Support the Yard Sign delivery project until all signs have gone out.
• Store a box of yard signs and metal H-frames (medium size, light weight).
• Accept delivery orders and complete them within 7 days.
• Deliver orders by setting up the yard sign in their yard, knocking on the door, backing far away, and letting them know their sign has been delivered if they answer the door.
• Provide information on requesting a yard sign to those who are interested.
• Be a cheerful ambassador of PBOT and the Greenways Volunteer Program to the public.

Skills and Qualifications

• Live in or near one of the Greenways Response zones.
• Own a cell phone with a data plan, functioning camera, and capable of sending and receiving texts.
• Wear work appropriate clothing, including closed toed shoes.
• Agree to store and accept restock of yard signs and H-frames.

A goal of the Slow Streets | Safe Streets initiative is to build awareness and support of our Neighborhood Greenways. No better way to do so than making our Greenways inviting, festive and visible to everyone who uses them.

The Greenways Volunteer Program is calling for all ideas on how we should enliven our streets. With your ideas and our supplies, resources and volunteers, together we can create beautiful, fun and inspiring movements across the Greenways network. Efforts now will include restrictions and safety measures to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus. As we gradually open up as a city, opportunities to involve the public will grow.

Guidelines for Greenways Decorations Ideas

• Must be tasteful and serve to support the Slow Streets | Safe Streets Initiative and our Neighborhood Greenways.
• Must respect, and hopefully reflect, the values and cultures of all our neighbors.
• Installations in the streets require a permit and fully closing the street to keep people safe.
• Must not be permanent nor harmful to the environment.
• Neither PBOT nor the Greenways Response Team are responsible for the upkeep, repair or replacements of decorations, even if we support their creation and installation.
